A graphics card is the "Hardware" that your computer uses to show the displays that have been processed by the computer. However, one cannot just install a graphics card and expect it to work with installing any "Software". The graphics driver literally "Drives" your graphics card by (in a nutshell) translating what the computer tells it and sending it to the graphics card into a language that it can understand. Like I said, that's not exactly what a driver does but It's basically the idea. Without a graphics driver, your computer can only use your graphics card to it's minimal ability. It's important to keep your diver software up-to-date by going to your system manufacturer's sight or going to the website of the company that made your graphics card.

Here are some links for popular drivers/graphics card manufacturers:

For ATI/AMD Drivers you can go here:

    For NVidia:

Imagine a graphic card as a "Car" a car by itself cannot be of any use as it will stay parked in stationary position, but if you can drive and if you are a driver you can start and drive around,

Similarly the graphic card is the actual hardware like the "Car" above where the display or monitor connects and the driver is the software that drives or tell the Graphic card what to do and what to display on to the monitor and this sits on the operating system of the PC like Win XP.

A card is the piece of the PC you plug your monitor into. You can touch, hold and change it for another one.

The driver is the program that makes the card communicate between the PC and what you see on your screen. You can't touch or hold it, but you can change it. :)
