Passport work as an ID to get on a military base?

I have a job with a construction crew doing clean on a military base. They told me to bring a drivers license to get through the gate but I don't have one. I do have a passport. I am a US citizen will this work? I know this should be one of the most official types of id but I don't want to chance having to sit some where for 10 hours while they work if I can't get in.

Update:

The people I am riding with have a pass to get in... I won't be driving hence... since I don't have a license but I was told that they check ids and I need a license but I think the passport should be fine.

As long as you have a State Issued Drivers License, a State ID, a Military ID, or a Passport, then you have one of the four accepted forms of identification and you should be a okay.

Lillian has it right you will have to stop @ the gate and go to "Pass and ID." You will need to know what building/command you are going to and how long you will be there. If you have a car you will need current registration, if rented your rental agreement, and proof of insurance if via your regular insurance or the rental company.

Most pass and ID offices have special lines for construction / repair people. However there may be special provisions that you may need to show like proof you are with the company you say you are with. Also if you bring any large trucks on base be prepared to be pulled over and have the truck inspected may be with or without dogs.

Also everyone in the car will need permission to be on base not just the driver.

You will probably need to stop in and get a pass.
