Which DSLR under $1000 has lowest noise at high ISO ?

Looking for a DSLR for indoor/low light shooting. Which one under $1000 gives the best results at 1600 ISO or even 3200 ISO ?

(I'll use it with a 50mm 1.8 or something very fast like this)

Look at dpreview.com. It will be the Nikon D40. This is what they said:

"The Nikon D40 delivers cleaner images across the ISO range than the other two cameras here, and it does so while maintaining good detail (although I would say this is probably second to Pentax who have a very hands-off approach to noise reduction). At ISO 1600 the D40's grey and black patches are very clean with only a hint of chroma noise, this compares very well to the K100D and EOS 350D (Rebel XT)."

    Hair is the link: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD40/page17.as...

I don't understand all the fancy big word Fhotoace said. But the D40 is the winner, that I do understand. And it's not expensive at all and U can save money for more lenses.

I agree with D90 or D5000. How close will you be to the subjects? A 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 would be nice if you are somewhat near the subjects. If the subjects are far off, then you'll need 2.8 zooms. Look at the Tokina 28-80 and 80-200 2.8, around 350.00 on ebay. They will work with the D90, but not the D5000, If you want a fast zoom lens for the D5000, you're looking at the Nikon 70-200 2.8, around 1400.00 used for version 1, 2400.00 new for version 2
