We have stepping stones that are slices of a Cedar tree that are shaped like hearts. They have been in the ground for three years now. We did remove the bark before we placed them in the ground.

You could also make a walkway out of treated lumber but you will need some kind of framework for it if it is sitting above or on top of the soil.

You could make a walkway out of wood. You would need to use a hard wood or treated timber.

Yes, walkways can be made of something as simple as wood chips or of more elaborate wood construction.

    Take a look at these:

Pressure-treated lumber is used in this ground-hugging structure. Plan on a walkway 36 inches wide with footings every 8 feet:

There are several types of rollout walkways: IPE (looks like teak, also called Pau Lope), cypress, Trex, which is a composite of recycled plastic and sawdust, Pressure Treated Southern Yellow Pine, which used to be the most common deck lumber. IPE, mahogany and plastic lumber are now growing in usage. The entire Atlantic City boardwalk was just redone with IPE wood, which doesn't warp, crack or split. "A lot of woods are too soft and have too much grain to them which makes them easily susceptible to mold and mildew."

The Atlantic City Boardwalk was originally built with preservatively treated Southern Pine lumber in 1867.Structural glued laminated timber (glulam) is a popular construction material that is frequently used for pedestrian bridges and walkways, & is easily preservative-treated for wet service conditions.

This walkway uses ground contact treated lumber, supported by the ground:

An excellent, non-treated wood alternative is western red cedar. "Renewable and biodegradable, cedar does not require chemical treatment due to its unique naturally occurring preservatives resistant to rot and insects... It's naturally durable without the need for chemical treatment, dimensionally stable, resilient, and lightweight - unlike some plastic or imitation wood products."

Tan bark, coarse-packed sand and redwood chips make inexpensive side path materials, and cedar shavings add a wonderful scent in wet weather.

    Good luck!!! Hope this helps.

You can make a walkway out of treated lumber, but it would need to be slightly raised. It would be like a long, skinny deck.. I have seen these in parks before. I think that the pavers will be cheaper and last longer.

If you want inexpensive, how does FREE sound to you??? You can make a nice pathway through the woods using tree chippings from the utility company or from tree trimming companies. They often will give away their trimmings that have been through the chippers. I can pick up the chipped material at my local utility company, all I want and all for free. They have huge piles of it in their yard. I just have to load it and take it away. The local tree-trimming companies here will even deliver a truckload of chipped material when they work in the area, as it saves them from having to pay dump fees, and the material doesn't go into the landfills. So try calling your local utility company and ask them what they do with the tree trimmings. You can also call local tree-trimming companies and ask them. You can't beat FREE for a good price!

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
