In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) which services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server provides the resource by connecting to the specified server and requesting the service on behalf of the client. A proxy server may optionally alter the client's request or the server's response, and sometimes it may serve the request without contacting the specified server. In this case, it would 'cache' the first request to the remote server, so it could save the information for later, and make everything as fast as possible.

A proxy server that passes all requests and replies unmodified is usually called a gateway or sometimes tunneling proxy.

A proxy server can be placed in the user's local computer or at specific key points between the user and the destination servers or the Internet.

Proxy is a representative who acts instead of the real owner. Generaoly the proxy only helps in the voting in meetings and generally not allowed to speak for the person for whom he is a proxy.

A proxy is a person who acts on behalf of another. Example: A stockholder of a company wants to vote at the shareholder meeting, but cannot attend. They send their ballot to a "proxy" voter who will cast a ballot for them.

proxy is someone voting on your behalf. This is most often done when a shareholder of a company, and you are not going to travel to some big convention to vote when you have a measly 0.00002% share in that company. You assign a proxy to vote on your behalf, usually a person who owns considerably more stock than you and who will be in attendace.

Proxy is where you hide your identity. Like here we are all participating with a proxy identity. So, you are already using a proxy identity.

Proxies are basically bits of software, or occasionally websites, that allow you to connect to websites through another one. Benefits include:

    More anonymity on the web.

You can sometimes access blocked sites using them.

They vary from complex bits of software to simply using google translator to translate a website from french to English, then changing the fr|en to en|en

You are, in effect, translating from English to English.
