  • Electrical Question - How tight to tighten the screws on circuit breakers?

I recently ran a 12/3 dedicated line for a portable a/c unit, and while I was in the panel, I decided to replace all the breakers because they were old and some were rusty from the previous panel. We had an issue w/ the main feed coming from outside that leaked water into the previous panel..I had an electrician resolve that issue and replace the panel about 5 yrs ago but for some reason he used the old breakers which I know had to have gotton wet at some time or another, and most had rust stains on the outsides of them.

Anyway my question pertains to how tight to make the terminal screw? I know theres a technical spec of 20 inch pounds but I don't have a torque scredriver. I put the wire under and basically tightened as much as I could with a normal sized screwdriver...without going to the point that I felt like it might strip out but probably close to it. Now I'm worried maybe they're too tight and the wire got cut or damaged. Would there be some symptom occuring if this has happened? I've been worrying now about this for 2 days, that I either got the screws too tight, or maybe not even still not tight enough. Can someone chime in with how tight they go? I realize this is not going to be an easy question to answer. I do get some flicker when the compressors start in either the a/c, fridge, or frozen drink machine but I'm pretty sure that always happened even before I replaced the breakers.
