  • Paying on your Mortgage: Shouldn't interest decrease as balance decreases?

    So I'm paying off my mortgage early. Why is it that the amount going to principal is the same amount that my "chart balance" shows, even though my balance is almost 25k less than what it should be at the present moment. Shouldn't the amount going towards principal increase as my balance of the mortgage decreases?

    Example:

    200k mortgage

    principal = 150.00

    interest= 850.00

    total payment for mortgage= 1000.00

    subtract 25k from balance= 175k

    shouldn't my principal payment be more

    shouldn't my interest rate be less

    actual payment is still 1000 (that doesn't change)

  • Removing grout from pebble tile backsplash?

    So here's my issues:

    We did a self DIY on our kitchen backsplash and 3 out of 4 walls turned out well. However the final wall the grout dried to fast to work with and now we have too much grout and a gouge on the bottom where it meets the countertop.

    What can you do to: 1) remove excess DRY grout that has been sealed 2) change the color of the grout from a silver to a light beige or brown 3) will using selphuric acid hurt my granite countertops if we use it to try and strip the grout down with it?

  • Is this remodel quote reasonable?

    I am redoing a 12x15 kitchen.

    I was quoted ~$11,500 for cabinets and labor (21 cabinets, plus a few filler pieces, plus crown molding). No tear down just installation.

  • Conversion of garage...?

    I have a two car attached to the house and a separate 2 car garage with bonus room above detached from the house.

    Do you think if I converted the garage attached to the house I would benefit from the additional sqft. or would I be better off keeping all 4 garages. My home right now is 4 bedrooms ~2400sqft. I would put an additional bath in the garage with a closet to be able to sell its as a 5th room if necessary for resale. We would convert it to either a bigger kitchen or an indoor workout space.

    Also we are at the top of our price range for the neighborhood. There is only 1 other house in the neighborhood that has a 3-5 car garage.

  • HVAC AC/Heat Repair question?

    We have a 2200 sqft house in the Eastern part of North Carolina. The Zone board on the AC went out while attempting to install a programmable theromostat (long story). The cost to repair is $890 (new zone board) plus $378 for two programmable therostats plus $167 for a one year servicing agreement for them to come and service 2x per year.

    Would it be better to purchase a whole new unit or just fix the old one. Our unit is 5 years old. Current unit is a Gibson Air Handler and Heat Pump. We currently have one unit outside and something up in the attic.

    Thanks.

  • Dog hates walking on leash....?

    I have a 3 1/2 month old female Bullmastiff, very smart and very stubborn. She was the alfa dog in her litter.

    When I place her on the leash, she lags behind and puts her nose to the ground. I have tried both the 10ft (to keep her at my side) and retractable leash (to allow her to lag a bit behind and sniff). However I don't know what to do. I also have her brother and he was quick to train to walk at our side. I would like to be able to take both dogs out for a walk in the morning and evening without having to take 2 walks (one for each dog).

    I have started to give her extra time in taking her out by herself in front of our house on the street and work on getting her to come and praising her profusely when she does, but I'm wondering how long this alfa sniffing the ground female butt to the ground thing is going to last. My hubby is thinking about a choke collar (which I am against).

    I just want a pleasant experience when walking. Any guidance would be grateful!

    Okay so hubby put a disk in the player that the dvd can't read now its stuck. I've read the manual, called customer support and the only thing I can do is take it to a service center. Anyone have any suggestions or had this happen to them. I've unplugged it completely for 10 minutes, and nothing happened. HELP, its less than 1 week old.

  • White kitchen cabinets...?

    I would like to create a cozy coffee cafe theme (simple, not busy) in my kitchen. I have stark white cabinets (that will stay). The only thing I found is the fabric for the roman shade I am making for the window... it is a brown marble background with bluish/teal 5" coffee cups throughout. I have white appliances.

    My flooring is tile, light carmel/ tan color (may replace, but at a later date). The current countertop is forest green laminate (replacing), and white walls.

    I would like to paint the walls a shade lighter than the bluish teal coffee cups with a darker rag wash on top so its not so "in your face". Then do a 1" square tile glass backsplash using a collection of beige-brown-chocholate colored mixed tiles with a few bluish/teal throw in to bring it all together.

    Here is my question: I have no idea what to with the countertops. High Def WilsonArt Laminate (fossilrock), brushed stainless steel, copper with a patina finish.

    Should I change the flooring out, if so w/what
