Will changing router modem change my IP address? ?

    Favourite answer:

The publicly IP is normally dynamic and changes each time you reboot the router but the LAN IP does not change. However, if you change the router, you will almost certainly get a new external IP, and quite probably a different internal IP.

When is the US going to have gigabit internet speeds?

When is the US government going to spend money like the South Korean government and updated the old broadband internet to gigabit internet speeds? There is only three or so broadband ISP companies in the US and they are not going to spend millions of dollars updating the internet to gigabit internet speeds. When is the US government going to spend the money so they can update to gigabit internet speeds?

    Best router?

I used multiple devices in my home which my family uses the same Internet as me. My router can only manage 4 devices at a time. What do I need for more than 4 multiple devices? For example there is 8 devices altogether.

Faster processor and USB adapter or lower speed and ethernet?

Will a 1.8GhZ processing speed and USB adapter to connect to wired broadband over a 10m cable give a better performance than an ethernet cable and lower speed of 1.1GHz.

The reason for this, need wired ethernet broadband connection to work outside on laptop, understand a USB connection loses speed over a long cable (which need to use) and it's therefore better to have an ethernet, however, most new laptops tend to have USB instead.  Given the 2 above options, which is the best to go for?

What if someone's using my wifi?

    Favourite answer:

Are you SURE someone has been using your wireless network?  I've been fooled in the past, seeing an unknown MAC address...to later realize it was a friend's cell phone (authorized) or a smart TV (authorized) or a networked printer (authorized)

Oh, and assuming somebody did break into your wifi, blacklisting the MAC will not help.  It takes about 10 seconds to "spoof" a mac address.  If you want to lock out users, you need to use a WHITE list.  Even that can be attacked, but it's much harder.  You put friendly mac addresses on the WHITE list, and those are the only ones that can connect to your wifi..

Why is my internet speed only 70mbps when I should be getting 980mbps? ?

    Favourite answer:

    Congestion

As an analogy consider this scenario; You are at a card table. What you do with the cards is up to you, the card dealer has unlimited cards and deals cards one at a time very fast! You are the only player (apart from the dealer), so you get the cards dealt to you a top speed! Then someone else joins the table, and the dealer now has to deal to the both of you (one card at a time), the speed that you are receiving is now cut in half! The dealer is still dealing at the same speed! Now lets say 8 more people join the table, you are only receiving a tenth of the cards in the same time as you would if you were alone!

Now take into account that you are not the only person in your area on the Internet, you may find it faster if you use the web at, say, 3am, than it is at busy times.

Also 980mbps refers to the bit rate, not the byte rate, (max 122mBytes ps)

I tried to upgrade my broadband speed to 500 mbps but my ISP says my cable modem cannot support 500 mbps. Why?

    Favourite answer:

You may have bought it a month ago, but that's an outdated cable modem; it only supports DOCSIS 3.0, not 3.1. DOCSIS 3.0 can handle up to 1 Gbps download, but only 200 Mbps upload. If the plan you're trying to upgrade has a higher upload than that, then you would not be able to get the full speed.

    Rj568a vs rj568b?

My question is this... if orange and orange white are 1 twisted pair and green and green white are a 2nd twisted pair... and the wire is all the same inside the sheathing... and all of those 4 twisted pairs are in turn twisted quads of pairs... why the hell does it matter if you do a or b... how would ANY device ever know the difference? What exactly makes one different? Countless websites say b is standard but a is superior and reverse compatible to whatever... but its o ly plastic changing! This is driving me nuts... both are straight pinned... how does it matter green or orange as long as both ends are the same?

Should I buy WiFi with Spectrum or buy my own?

Spectrum charges a $5 rental fee for WiFi. If I buy my own router, I would pay around $40 only one time. Which one would be better? Is Spectrum's WiFi better or are they all the same?

how do I fix the wifi proximity on my laptop?

    Favourite answer:

My guess is probably the antenna (which is usually a wire in around the display) is broken or become detached from the board.

It is like the second thing you take off when you open a laptop (most) but cracking the case and putting it back together is not usually easy.  So I would take it to a repair shop to see if that is the problem.

An easier way to debug it is to use a usb/wifi adapter.  They are really cheap, usually $30.  Get one that is 802.11ac.   If that one works, you can use it and forego your onboard.   If it bothers you, then you can fix it and stick the adapter in a drawer for the next time.

Why do people say lan is faster than wifi?

    Favourite answer:

You are doing something wrong, then, or have a faulty device or cable.

Note that you should _never_ connect anything other than a router directly to a modem!

If you have a combined Modem-Router (with eg. four Ethernet ports & WiFi built in) that's OK, just confusing terminology.

However - if you are really connecting direct to a modem (with just one Ethernet port) then that is a serious security risk, as well as a really! bad configuration.

    Ethernet port or USB adapter?

Hi, would there be any difference in the connection quality between having wired broadband via an ethernet port as opposed to connecting with USB + adapter, noticed newer laptops don't tend to have the ethernet?
